Facebook Celebrates 6th Birthday and 400 Million Users by Rolling Out New Redesign

Happy 6th Birthday Facebook!Just a short year ago, Facebook was at less than 200 million members strong.  Since then, Facebook has more than doubled its membership, created a strong platform for businesses and rolled out several redesigns.

Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement about Facebook reaching another milestone of 400 million users was published in his Thursday evening blog post as Facebook celebrates its sixth birthday.

The rollout of the newly redesigned users Home Page is happening slowly but surely. Some users have woken up this morning to find their Facebook Home page looking different.  The last Facebook redesign that happened three months ago was all about creating “simplified” privacy settings and now the new changes are all about “simplifying” the page navigation and focusing on the “most used” features.

Here is the snapshot of what Facebook Home Page is looking like today for some users:

Facebook Home Page redesign

In the top menu, you will find your new Requests, Messages and latest Notifications. For example, when you receive a Friend Request you’ll see a red bubble appear on the left side of the search bar. When you click on the icon, you’ll see a drop-down menu with your new friend requests. The same is true for your Messages and your latest Notifications.

The Home and Profile links are now located in the top-right corner along with your Account pull down menu. Your Account menu will now get you to your Friends section, Account Settings, privacy Settings and Logout.

The left menu is now organized to make it easier to find content from your friends. You can now access messages, events, photos, friends, applications, games, pages, groups, notes and links from one place —  to the left of your News Feed.

Your News feed is now filtered as Top News and Most Recent instead of the old version having it as: Top News and Live Feed.

In their introduction to the new navigation, Facebook says that their new design comes from five months of testing and playing with different designs of the homepage, and their focus was to improve the users experience by improving the navigation to commonly used features.

Users will no doubt see social media training materials on the entire site soon but for now, this should give you a good indication of what you can expect.
